Keep an eye on your tank over the next few hours to see if the cloudiness starts to go away – if it doesn’t, wait 24 hours then perform another water change. ![]() When you perform a large water change, the cloudiness of the tank water may not go away immediately but, as the water quality in your tank goes up, the bacteria should eventually settle down. ![]() It will also serve to remove the organic material on which bacteria and algae may be feeding. The water looks milky white, and in some cases, brown. A best practice is to rinse the substrate in smaller quantities to remove any contaminants. These days, tanks and starter kits can be purchased for under 100 and they often can be bought used. Along with the tank, purchase a good filtration system and pump. A goldfish must have a proper home, meaning at least a 10-gallon tank. Substrates for marine aquariums can be extremely dusty and if not thoroughly rinsed, can cause cloudy water. If your goldfish lives in such a small, unaerated system, this may be the reason behind the cloudy water. By siphoning tank water from the substrate you will be collecting and removing accumulated detritus that might be contributing to poor water quality in your tank. What kind of substances found in the goldfish tank The cloudy substance in the water is the waste product of the food and fish waste. The three most common reasons for cloudy fish tank water are messy substrate, poor water quality and bacterial blossoms. Start by siphoning the gravel in your tank using an aquarium gravel vacuum and perform a 25% water change using tap water that has been treated with an aquarium water conditioner. If you don’t do that, the aquarium tank water will cloud up immediately. Removing more can shock your fish as it’s likely to change the water parameters. There are a couple of culprits for this type of cloudy water, and the simplest is residue from your substrate material Gravel is usually coated in a fine layer of dust that you need to remove before adding it to your tank. In order to completely solve a problem with cloudy tank water (the correct way) you need to improve the water quality in your tank and remove the built-up waste from the substrate. It’s best to remove around 15-30 of the water, depending on the severity, but never more. ![]()
